This is Hunter.  Hunter and his tennis ball were inseparable.  He would play catch until he died of exhaustion if needed.  We took another hike around Burr Pond in Torrington the other day and we both remembered a very horrifying experience we had with Hunter over ten years ago.  While we hiked around the pond, John threw the tennis ball into the woods. Hunter would run after it, bring it back and this would happen from the beginning to the end of the trail.

One time, we stopped at fire rock where people have bonfires.  Next to it is a ledge. We walked over to peer over the ledge to see how far down it was.  Hunter stood next to us looking down the ravine too. But, he opened his mouth and his friend ball went over the ledge.

John and I turned to each other in slow motion...."HUNTER N O O   O   O  !"  as we saw him fly over the ledges edge and down into the ravine to rescue ball.  His ears caught wind and they flew up like doggie sails as he plummeted down about 50 feet.  He landed on a piece of ledge.  We ran down, through the trees and bushes, down, down, down we went.  Then we could see him about 100 feet away.  John made his way through the underbrush.  He reached up to Hunter fearful that Hunter broke his legs, or pelvis, or spine.  But, to our relief, he was just bruised up and in shock.  John lifted him (90 pounds of dog) and set him down on the forest floor.

He had ball in his mouth.

We all survived.
