devil's tower

Despite yesterday's snow and ice storm, we had a glorious day at Devil's Tower today.  We were surprised to see all the American Indian prayer cloths tied to trees though! Apparently, the American Indians still use Devil's Tower as a worship area to date and hang strips of cloth on the trees as physical and symbolic representations of prayers. This tower is a result of the overlying rock and earth eroding from over and around it.  It was also the central point of the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
