All the way to the end of the peninsula

We decided to take a road trip and see what was at the end of the peninsula where the end of the Mississippi River (or is it the beginning?) meets the Gulf.  It took an hour to drive from the middle of New Orleans to the end of the spit.  The sights along the entire drive were not what  we were expecting.  There were oil refineries after oil refineries, a huge coal plant, oil companies massive parking lots where the workers who park and then get transported off shore to the oil drilling rigs, helicopters going back and forth to offshore rigs and back; FEMA trailers from Katrina still being lived in surrounded by garbage and squalor; one enterprising person actually took a bunch of FEMA trailers and repurposed them into a village and called it a hotel.
